Club Żak is pleased to call for entries to the residency/premiere 2020 competition which accompanies the 12th Gdańsk Dance Festival. Applicants are welcome to submit projects of pieces in broadly conceived contemporary dance.

The purpose of the competition is to support and promote contemporary dance and contemporary ballet. The contest is addressed to Polish dancers and participants of the Solo Dance Contest, organised by Club Żak as part of the Gdańsk Dance Festival. Entries may be submitted by persons living in Poland since 1 January 2019 (or longer) and by dancers based abroad who presented their pieces at the Solo Dance Contest, organised as part of the Gdańsk Dance Festival in 2014-2019.

 Selected projects will be developed at Club Żak from February through June 2020. Dancers will be allocated with PLN 6,000 (duo pieces) and PLN 10,000-20,000 (large cast performances); the organisers will also provide technical assistance during general rehearsal (acoustics and lighting engineers), publicity, and rehearsal space.

 Selected artists will be assisted by mentors – eminent dancers and choreographers: Defne Erdur (Turkey), Palle Granhoj (Denmark) and Nimrod Freed (Israel). The residencies will conclude with public premieres at the 12th Gdańsk Dance Festival 4-6th September 2020.


Applications should be sent by 2nd December 2019, 4 pm, at the latest.

Nimord Freed - after 10 years of performing and creating in New York, he established Tami Dance Company in 2004. He teaches in Jerusalem Academy of Dance and in Kibbutzim College‘s School of Dance Arts. Contest results

31 applications were submitted to the residency/premiere 2020 project.
Three applications were submitted over time, while seven did not meet the formal requirements. These applications were not considered.

Residency/premiere terms and regulations

§1

Basic information

The contest is organised by Club ZAK - a local government cultural institution based in Gdańsk, Grunwaldzka street 195/197, 80-226 Gdańsk, holding NIP 5830004739, REGON 190510481, entered into the Register of Cultural Institutions run by the City of Gdańsk under number 5/98.

Basic schedule of the contest:

announcement of the contest: 11.10.2019;

application deadline: 2.12.2019, h. 16.00;

contest resolution: 20.12.2019;

coaching dates: with Nimord Freed 10-24.02.2020; with Palle Granhoj 14-26.04.2020; with Defne Erdur 7-17.05.2020; those dates may change within a given month;

premiere presentations in February and April are scheduled for the last day of residency: 24th  February 2020 and 26th April 2020, and project with coaching in May will be premiered within the Gdansk Dance Festival: 5th June 2020.

§ 2

Participation in the contest

The applications can be send by dancers who are:

Polish residents, living in Poland at least from 1.01.2019, 

living abroad, and had presented their performances within the Solo Dance Contest organised as a part of Gdansk Dance Festival 2014 - 2019.

Dancers in the cast of submitted projects should be:

of age; 

graduates or students of the last year of public and non-public artistic schools: of dance, theater or ballet;

contemporary dance dancers with at least two productions (participation in a full-scale dance theatre contemporary dance/contemporary ballet  performance of not less than 40 min.)

All the dancers of submitted project should have common contemporary dance/contemporary ballet productions realised within 1.09.2017 till 2.11.2019.

The Contest allows only application of:

new and original projects that will be premiered within the residency/premiere contest;

duos or bigger cast performances, where dominant form of expression is contemporary dance / contemporary ballet.

Duos should be maximum 40 minutes long, bigger cast performances - maximum 60 minutes. 

Technical requirements of applied projects must be adapted to the technical capabilities and equipment of Club ZAK (described in Attachment 1).

§ 3

The application

The application should be submitted through web page www.gdanskdancefest.pl, in Polish or English, until 2.12.2019, h.16.00;

Obligatory attachments to the application:

legible scan of statements (Attachment 2) signed handwritten by the applying dancer and dancers in the cast;

link or scans of promotional materials that confirm the cooperation of dancers regarding the requirements in §2, 3;

legible scans of diplomas or promotional materials or links to web pages confirming status of dancers regarding requirements in §2,  2.

All applications submitted after the deadline, not fulfilling the requirements in § 2 and §3, 1, 2  and 4, with formal deficiencies (where formal deficiency is: lack of required attachments, incorrectly filled in application form or no signature) will not be considered.

Contest resolution:

Submitted projects will be evaluated by a three-person committee, whose composition and rules are determined by the Director of Club ZAK;

The results of the contest, after approval by Director of Club ZAK, will be announced on gdanskifestiwaltanca.pl and facebook.com/gdanskifestiwaltanca. Published results of the competition will only contain information about the chosen projects of the finalists.

§ 4

Realisation of the projects:

The Organizer will provide funds: for duos – 6 000 PLN gross and 10 000-20 000 PLN gross for performances with bigger cast. 1/3 of the amount may be paid as an advance upon signature of the contract, the other half after the premiere of the realised project. The Contest Organizer will sign the contracts no earlier than the first day of scheduled coaching. Detailed rules will be specified in the contract signed with the Organizer.

Coaching, referred to in §1, will consist of contemporary dance lessons and work on motion, dramaturgy, spacing and directing, and 2 days of general rehearsals.

3. Organizer's obligations:

The Organizer will reimburse the travel expenses (1 arrival and 1 departure) on the basis of bus or 2nd class train original tickets in Poland or up to 150 Euros of travel expenses from abroad, on basis of tickets;

The Organizer will guarantee accommodation during the period of obligatory coaching referred to in §1, for finalists originating outside the Tri-City in shared hostel;

The Organizer will guarantee alimentation (dinners of max. 19 PLN value each in Club ZAK) during the period of obligatory coaching referred to in §1.

Within the available dates the organizer will allow use of the rehearsal space, before the first day of coaching.

The Organizer will not reimburse the cost of transporting stage set.

The Organizer will not reimburse the cost of local transport.

4.  Finalist’s obligations:

Contest finalists coming from outside the Schengen area or do not have residencies in the Schengen area are required to present a visa authorizing them to undertake artistic activities;

after the announcement of the results, change of the title of submitted project is not possible;

change of cast is possible only in case of force majeure (illness or injury documented by sick note); it may not exceed 1/3 of the original cast;

The Finalists are required to prepare costumes, stage design, music, visualizations and other materials before the coaching referred to in §1;

The Finalists are obliged to place in the promotional materials of the realised performance information: ‘with a support of Club ZAK, premiere (date, place), within the 12th Gdansk Dance Festival’ and the internet address of the website (www.klubzak.com). In the absence of this information, Finalists will not be allowed to participate in Club ZAK’s contests and projects in the following year;

The Finalists allow photographic documentation of the performance during the general rehearsals by a photographer designated by the Organizer;

Dancers who fail to appear on a coaching day will be given reduced day amount of money per person (except for cases of force majeure and documented by sick note).

The Finalists have the full copyrights of the performance and can release it freely after the premiere at Club ZAK.

Further details of realisation of the projects will be established in the form of a written agreement between the dancers and the Club ZAK after announcing the results of the competition.

Conditions for withdrawal from the realisation of project:

if after the announcement of the Contest results dancer withdraws his project, the Organizer may propose realisation of the project to the next applicant, whose project received the highest number of points;

if the project is not realised due to the fault of the finalist or the finalists does not appear for the mandatory coaching referred to in §1, he will not be allowed to participate in Club ZAK’s contests and projects in the following year;

if the project is not realised due to force majeure (an unforeseeable external event that could not be prevented by either Party) or other circumstances independent of the will of either Party (in particular a finalists’s illness documented by sick note) the Parties shall not be liable.

§ 5

Final statements

Sending a competition entry is tantamount to acceptance by the applicant of the terms of the Competition and these regulations.

Registration - application to participate in the Contest is tantamount to consent to the processing of participant's personal data for purposes related to the organization and conduct of the Contest and project. Appropriate consent along with the implementation of the right to information is included in the application form and on the Organizer's website.

The administrator of personal data is the Organizer, who undertakes to apply technical and organizational measures to data subjects participating in the Contest to ensure data protection in accordance with the standards contained in Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and the repeal of Directive 95/46 / EC (general data protection regulation, hereinafter "GDPR"), the law on the protection of personal data and other provisions of national law.

The participant of the Contest has the right to access their data and the right to rectify, delete, limit processing, the right to data transfer, the right to raise objections, the right to withdraw consent at any time without affecting the legality of processing, which was carried out consent before withdrawal.

Making the application constitutes consent to the processing of the participant's personal data for purposes related to the recruitment to the Contest and the implementation of the contest and the project.

Personal data collected by the Organizer will be collected and processed only for the purposes of the Conetst.

Each participant has the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory body (the President of the Office for Personal Data Protection), when he / she considers that the processing of his personal data violates the provisions of the general regulation on personal data protection of 27 April 2016.

Providing personal data by the participant is voluntary, however, the lack of consent for their processing for the indicated purpose results in the inability to participate in the Contest.

The Organizer reserves the right to publish the name, surname, image and information about the participant and to place this information in the Organizer's information and advertising materials, including in the Organizer's publications and on its websites or information profiles.

The Organizer is not responsible for the consequences of providing incorrect data in submitted applications.

In all matters not regulated in these regulations, decisions shall be made by the Director of Organizer.

The Organizer reserves the right to change the rules during the Contest and commits to immediately publish the changed regulations at the same places where he previously published the rules of the Contest.

The Organizer reserves the right to change the rules of the Contest, end or discontinue the Contest at any time without giving any reason.
